Hear from Gemma, Tax Partner, as she shares her innovative journey
Introduction
I’m Gemma, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm married to Mark and mum to two kids, 6-year-old Isaac and 4-year-old Amelia. I’ve recently started running (still don’t love it!) and have just crocheted my first hat! I love Drag Queen shows, reading, and gin.
I am the National Head of R&D at Azets. I joined in November 2022, was promoted to Partner in July 2023, and took over the service line in January 2024. With a scientific background and industry experience, I’ve been supported to challenge and improve our service delivery, embracing diversity and supporting the vision for the R&D team.
My Priorities
Ensuring consistent high-quality service across all offices is a priority. We needed to communicate risks authentically and manage them internally. By redefining our core process and tools with a team of specialists, we’ve aligned the AUK R&D team, increased collaboration, and standardised processes, giving us more time for clients.
Innovation
The R&D industry has seen significant changes, impacting the SME community. We’ve supported clients through webinars, seminars, and direct conversations, ensuring robust evidence for claims, identifying restructuring opportunities, and supporting funding requirements.
Support and Empowerment
Azets has trusted me and offered flexibility, especially important as a mum to two kids, one with a medical condition. The ‘family first’ approach and genuine empathy are priceless. I’m part of various teams across the UK, providing diverse perspectives and support, ensuring initiatives have total buy-in.
My Key Learnings
- Build a diverse network to learn from others and share insights.
- Find champions who will support and advocate for you.
- Lead by example, reflecting high standards in your actions.
- Manage expectations by prioritising and empowering others, and communicate your priorities clearly.

My experience has been that the leadership team at Azets follow the ethos that Steve Jobs did – “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; hire smart people so they can tell you what to do.”
